In 2012, Hermes launched two styles of Arceau Straw Marquetry watches. It’s the first time that Straw Marquetry applied to dials by Hermes. Hermes has entered into a partnership with Agnès Paul-Depasse since that cooperation. During the research into wheat straws, Agnès Paul-Depasse found that beetle shells could be creative materials to use better. Hermes and Agnès Paul-Depasse cooperated together to finish Hermes Arceau Scarab Beetle Elytra Marquetry Pocket watch in 2016. In the next year, they finished scarf-inspired Hermes Arceau Les facéties de Pégase together again.
Hermes Arceau Pocket Ailes et Ecailles is a two-piece limited numbered edition combining scarab beetle elytra marquetry with two other techniques: engraving and miniature enamel painting. The gifted artisans complete the work according to precise sequence. It all begins with the engraver, who sketches the contours of the motif on a gold plate inspired by a beach towel designed for Hermes by Pierre Marie. As the knife danced, waves and a fish begin to take shape. Agnès Paul-Depasse figures out how many pieces of rhombus beetle elytron she needs.
This initial engraving is followed by Grand Feu enamelling. The grooves are filled with wet enamel powder by the craftsman. Forming a vivid pattern of red and blue, some is opaque and the other is translucent. After being fired many times, enamel dial presents fine color layer. While the craftsman is carefully polishing enamel surfaces, Agnès Paul-Depasse is cutting beetle elytron into rhombic scales in different sizes. To ensure the perfect fit and vivid effect, every piece of scales is put on the finished drawing and corrected to the required size. After making sure everything is all right, those scales are fixed on the dial. In the sunlight, scales reflect natural lustre and vivid effect.
After being completed, the dial is installed in a white gold watch case by Hermes. The all-polished white case echoes to the motif of the antique pocket watch and allows us to focus on the wonderful dial. The stirrup-shaped lug echoes to the iconic design of Hermes Arceau Collection. The sapphire case back allows us to appreciate the in-house automatic mechanical movement, H1837. H1837 is the fruit by Hermes and Vaucher Manufacture, the main force for watches by Hermes. It is at 26.6mm×3.70mm, with two barrels providing approx 50 hours of power reserve.
The result is the lifting rope and the pouch in alligator skin to draw a perfect full stop. Hermes has had a century history in manufacturing top leather goods. The wonderful pocket watch and the blue alligator-skin strap and pouch is a luxury and perfect match. Hermes Arceau Pocket Ailes et Ecailles reflects extraordinary hand-made techniques and Hermes’s craftsmanship. The scarab beetle elytra marquetry dial echoes to the theme that Hermes draws inspiration from nature.
